THE FRELON
Physical description
Called cabridans, guichards or lombardes depending on the
country, hornets are insects of the family Vespidae, just like wasps. They can
be up to 45 mm long, females being longer than males and workers. There are
black and white hornet species, but their belly is usually striped with yellow
and black, while the wings are red. These wings are four in number, the fore
wings being longer than the hind wings.
His place of life
The hornets are native to Asia. It is on this continent that
we find the majority of the population. However, we find some in Africa,
America and Europe. They live in organized groups of several hundred
individuals. The females provide reproduction, the workers maintain the colony
and supply it with food, while the males defend the queen and the whole colony.
They make their nests in the ground, or in the hollow of trees or walls.
His diet
Hornets feed on insects (bees, caterpillars, wasps, and) and
sugary liquids they extract from plants, as well as honey that they sometimes
take from beehives.
His reproduction
In autumn, colonies produce males and females that mate
before the onset of winter. Only the fertilized females will survive the winter
and spring, they build their nest and lay the first eggs. From this first
series of spawning will be formed workers who will be responsible for feeding
the eggs, larvae and nymphs that will follow. From there, the queen will devote
herself mainly to the laying, which is not the least of tasks, knowing that a
queen can lay up to 3,000 eggs during its existence.
His life expectancy
The hornets live at most 4 seasons. Indeed, only recently
fertilized queens spend the winter.
The scream of the hornet
The hornet does not have a distinctive call. It can however
be recognized on its particularly noisy flight.
Particular signs
Contrary to popular belief, the bite of the hornet is no more
dangerous than that of a bee or a wasp. It is nevertheless much more painful
and some species of hornet have a deadly venom sting. But in general, hornets
are peaceful and only attack when their nest is threatened or when they have no
other means of defense.
